Forget the Former Things
Releasing What Hinders Your Forward Movement
Scripture: Isa. 43:18 (NKJV)
In Isaiah 43:18, the Lord says, “Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old.” This is not a call to pretend the past did not happen. It is a gracious invitation into freedom.
The past can cling to us in more than one way. Sometimes it holds us through regret—sins we have confessed, but still rehearse in our minds. Sometimes it holds us through wounds—moments of betrayal, loss, or disappointment that continue to shape how we expect the future to unfold. And sometimes it holds us through familiarity. Even good seasons can quietly limit us if they cause us to cling to what God has already completed rather than walk forward into what he is doing now.
Isaiah’s message is timely because God often brings newness to those who are willing to release what has become weight. If we want to perceive the new thing God is doing, we must loosen our grip on what lies behind. Letting go is an act of trust. It is agreeing with God that the past does not have the final word, and that his purposes are not restricted by what has already happened.
The Holy Spirit helps us do what we cannot do by willpower alone. He strengthens us to release old patterns, lingering distractions, and settled mindsets that compete for our attention and drain our spiritual clarity. He also creates space within us for fresh hope, renewed obedience, and deeper joy.
Today, receive the Lord’s invitation to travel lighter. Release what you cannot change, and make room for what God desires to form in you now.
Prayer Focus
Ask the Lord to help you release past disappointments, hurts, sins, and distractions—anything that competes for your attention or weighs down your spirit. Pray for grace to let go of memories, patterns, or mindsets that hinder your walk with Christ. Ask God to make room in your heart for what he desires to do now.
Practical Moment
Identify one past event, regret, distraction, or pattern you need to release. Write it on a small piece of paper. Tear it up as a simple act of surrender, and thank the Lord for the new work he is doing in you.
Closing Prayer
Father, I release what I have been carrying. Heal what still hurts, cleanse what still accuses, and loosen what still distracts. By your Spirit, help me walk forward with freedom and faith. Make room in me for what you desire to do now. In Jesus’ name, amen.
If this spoke to you, consider passing it along to someone who could use encouragement today.
I hope today's post has been a blessing to you. Have a wonderful day.
Blessings,
