Scripture
"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
—2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
"3 Whenever I am afraid,
I will trust in You.
4 In God (I will praise His word),
In God I have put my trust;
I will not fear.
What can flesh do to me?"
—Psalm 56:3–4 (NKJV)
Reflection
Not all fear is unhealthy. Some forms of fear protect us from danger and help us respond wisely to real threats. But there is another kind of fear that Scripture warns against—the kind that begins to rule the heart, disturb the mind, and keep us from living in the peace and freedom God gives. This kind of fear can grow into dread, anxiety, timidity, or an unhealthy preoccupation with what might happen.
Paul tells Timothy that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Because of Christ, we do not have to live in bondage to fear. We do not have to fear life, fear death, or fear tomorrow as though God were absent. Christ has won the victory over sin, Satan, sickness, and death, and God is with us in every circumstance.
A prayer for freedom from fear asks God to calm what is disordered in us, strengthen what is weak, and teach us to rest in His presence. It is a prayer for courage, clarity, and peace. It is a prayer to trust God more deeply and to live in the confidence that He is greater than all that causes us dread.
Prayer
Father, free us from fear and from negative emotions that do not come from You.
You know what makes us anxious.
You know the thoughts we replay, the possibilities we dread, and the pressures that weigh on us.
You know how fear can grow in us and begin to affect the way we think, feel, and live.
Please calm our hearts and steady our minds.
Do not let fear take over.
Do not let anxiety keep ruling our thoughts.
Where our fears have been fed by uncertainty, bring Your peace.
Where they have been fed by painful memories, bring healing.
Where they have been fed by lies, bring truth.
Where they have been fed by isolation, remind us that You are near.
Help us not to live in dread of what might happen.
Help us remember that You are with us in today and that tomorrow is also in Your hands.
When fear rises suddenly, teach us to turn to You quickly.
Give us the courage to face what is in front of us.
Give us a sound mind when our thoughts feel unsettled.
Give us peace where fear has been draining our strength.
Thank You that You have not abandoned us.
Thank You that in Christ we do not have to be ruled by fear.
Lead us into greater freedom, deeper peace, and stronger confidence in You.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
