Scripture
“But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:
'God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.'”
—James 4:6 (NKJV)
“He has shown you, O man, what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you
But to do justly,
To love mercy,
And to walk humbly with your God?”
—Micah 6:8 (NKJV)
Reflection
Humility begins with seeing God rightly and seeing ourselves rightly before Him. It is not pretending we have no worth, and it is not speaking badly about ourselves. It is living with a true sense of who God is and who we are in relation to Him. Humility knows that every good thing we have is a gift, that we are dependent on God, and that we have no reason to boast in ourselves.
Pride can show up in many ways. It can appear as self-importance, stubbornness, defensiveness, a need to be right, a refusal to listen, or an unwillingness to yield. A prayer for humility asks God to make us teachable, lowly in heart, and ready to receive His grace. It is a prayer to walk with God in reverence, with others in gentleness, and with ourselves in honesty.
Prayer
Father, teach us true humility.
Keep us from pride, self-exaltation, and the need to put ourselves first.
Help us remember that every good thing we have comes from You.
Give us hearts that are teachable and willing to listen.
Keep us from stubbornness, defensiveness, and the desire to always appear right.
Teach us to walk humbly with You.
Help us depend on You each day.
Make us willing to serve others with gentleness and sincerity.
When pride rises in us, bring us low before You.
When ego clouds our judgment, give us clarity.
Remind us that we have no reason to boast before You.
Let humility show up in the way we speak, listen, and respond to others.
Make us quick to repent and willing to yield when needed.
Thank You that You give grace to the humble.
Make us more like Christ.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
