Scripture
“7 But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness. 8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.”
—1 Timothy 4:7-8 (NKJV)
Reflection
Discipline matters in every area of life. Growth, strength, and maturity do not happen without it. The Christian life is no exception. If we want to grow in godliness, we must cultivate practices that help us pay attention to God and respond to His work in our lives.
Spiritual disciplines create space for God. Through prayer, Scripture, worship, self-examination, obedience, and other faithful practices, we open ourselves to deeper formation. These habits help shape us into healthy, faithful, and fully devoted disciples of Jesus Christ. A prayer for spiritual discipline asks God to make us more intentional in the way we seek Him and more steady in the habits that lead to spiritual growth.
Prayer
Father, teach us to live with spiritual discipline.
Keep us from drifting through our days without making room for You.
Keep us from a careless life that leaves the soul weak and undernourished.
Help us to order our lives around what leads to godliness.
Teach us to make time for prayer, for Your Word, for worship, and for obedience.
Give us the strength to resist distraction.
Give us grace to be faithful in small things.
Give us perseverance to keep seeking You day by day.
When we are inconsistent, draw us back.
When we are lazy in spirit, stir us up again.
When we lose focus, help us return to what matters most.
Form in us habits that make room for Your presence.
Shape in us a steady life of prayer, Scripture, worship, and self-control.
Let our spiritual lives grow deeper, stronger, and more rooted in You.
Thank You that You are patient with us.
Thank You that Your grace not only forgives us, but also trains us to live well.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
