Comments on Gentleness
In the New Testament, "gentleness" (or meekness) is closely linked with love (1 Corinthians 4:21), forbearance (2 Corinthians 10:1; Titus 3:2), patience, humility (Ephesians 4:2; Colossians 3:12), and peaceableness, which entails the ability to "avoid quarrels" (RSV, Titus 3:2).Gentleness, characterized by graciousness or forbearance, is among the attributes of Jesus Christ himself. It's a demeanor that doesn't insist on its own rights but prioritizes others above oneself. The essence of gentleness lies in its contrast to contention and self-centeredness, evident in the refusal to retaliate when attacked. This quality of gentleness is simply an expression of extending grace to others, mirroring the grace the Lord has shown us. When we are in communion with Christ, our actions should reflect Christian behavior." Gentleness" is the disposition with which the Word of God is to be received (James 1:21), the wayward brother restored (Galatians 6:1), and the opponents of the Lord’s servant corrected with sound doctrine (2 Timothy 2:25). It should indeed permeate every aspect of Christian living (cf. James 3:13; 1 Peter 3:4). This characteristic was prominently displayed in the life of Jesus (Matthew 11:29; 21:5; 2 Corinthians 10:1), who taught that "the gentle in spirit ... shall inherit the earth" (Matthew 5:5)."Gentleness" may be understood as a humble and adaptable submission to God’s will, manifesting in humility, patience, and forbearance towards others. While it implies self-control, it is not entirely synonymous with it.
