QUESTION: What are spiritual fruit?
ANSWER: Spiritual fruit refer to the qualities and virtues that believers develop through the work of the Holy Spirit. These include love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, as outlined in Galatians 5:22-23. They reflect the character of Christ and demonstrate the transformative power of God's presence in the believer's life.
Spiritual fruit are often contrasted with the "works of the flesh," which represent sinful behaviors and attitudes that are contrary to the teachings of Christ. While the works of the flesh lead to destruction and separation from God, the fruit of the Spirit lead to spiritual growth, maturity, and a closer relationship with God.
The production of spiritual fruit is not something that believers achieve through their own efforts or willpower; rather, it is the result of allowing the Holy Spirit to work within them, transforming their hearts and minds. The emergence of spiritual fruit is thus a visible manifestation of the ongoing process of sanctification, wherein believers are progressively conformed to the image of Christ.
