Have you read a book or heard a teaching on the topic of spiritual disciplines? A spiritual discipline is a physical or mental activity that a Christian does in order to help his or her spiritual growth. Spiritual disciplines are what we do in the natural to positively benefit our spiritual lives. In this post, I offer a list of eight disciplines that I personally believe are essential for spiritual maturity. Each of these help us to create space in our lives for the Lord so that we can fellowship with him and become more like him.
DISCIPLINE #1: BIBLE STUDY
Bible study is the careful examination of the Scriptures. The purpose of Bible study is to uncover the meaning of the text. Our desire should be to understand the Bible within its historical, cultural, and literary context and discover what God’s Word has to tell us in every life situation. I recommend that every serious student of Scripture acquire a good study Bible.
- Read 2 Timothy 2:15; Psalm 119; and Colossians 3:16.
DISCIPLINE #2: BIBLICAL MEDITATION
Biblical meditation is reading, repeating, memorizing, and reciting the Scriptures. It is the process of reflecting deeply on God’s Word. God's Word should continually be in our minds and on our lips.
- Read Psalm 1:1-3 and Joshua 1:8.
DISCIPLINE #3: SOLITUDE AND SILENCE
Solitude is the state of being alone. Silence is the state of being without noise. Finding places of solitude and silence allows us to focus on God without distractions. To enhance our spiritual lives, we need alone time with God each day.
- Read Matthew 14:23; Mark 1:35; and Luke 5:16.
DISCIPLINE 4: PRAYER
Prayer is a dialog between you and the loving Heavenly Father. When you pray, you are communicating with someone with whom you have an intimate relationship. Effective prayer requires listening to God. This may involve sitting quietly in his presence while reflecting on what you are reading in the Bible. Many people have benefitted from the ACTS model of praying. ACTS stands for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. Prayer begins with honoring God before turning to our personal needs.
DISCIPLINE #5: WORSHIP
To worship is to adore, serve, and devote oneself completely to God.
- We worship God because he is worthy (Revelation 4:11).
- We worship God because we value him more than anything else.
- Worship is both an individual and a corporate discipline.
DISCIPLINE #6: COMMUNITY AND FELLOWSHIP
Engaging with a spiritual community or fellowship provides support, encouragement, and accountability in one's spiritual journey.
- Many Christians attend weekly church services.
- Great benefit may be derived from Sunday school classes, midweek services, regular church gatherings., and small groups.
- Community fosters a sense of belonging and strengthens faith as Christians grow together.
DISCIPLINE #7: SERVICE
To serve is to assist, minister to, help, care for, or work for someone.
- We must serve God and others. Service should be sacrificial and selfless.
- Jesus Christ said that the essence of ministry is service (Mark 10:43-45).
- Serving others and performing acts of kindness are fundamental ways we emulate the Lord Jesus Christ.
DISCIPLINE #8: JOURNALING
Journaling is the process of recording prayer requests, spiritual insights, guidance, or daily events.
- Writing is a great way of capturing what God is saying to you.
- You should find your own rhythm o writing. I typically record significant events and keep track of God is leading me over time.
May these brief comments on basic Christian practices enrich your spiritual journey. Have a blessed day.

ACTS. I like the acronym. I like your study because it is simple, but deep, and easy to understand.
Since I have been ill, I have been spending a lot of time alone. I believe I can hear Him more clearly.
God bless you Elder.
