Scripture
"I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."
—Ephesians 4:1–3 (NKJV)
"And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved."
—Acts 2:42–47 (NKJV)
Reflection
The church is the body of Christ in the world. It is not merely an institution or a gathering place. It is a people called by God, united in Christ, filled with the Spirit, and sent into the world in His name. The church is meant to reflect the character of Jesus through truth, love, holiness, prayer, worship, service, and faithful witness.
Because the church is made up of people, it can be affected by weakness, division, compromise, distraction, and weariness. This is why the church must be continually strengthened by God’s grace. A prayer for the church asks God to purify, unite, strengthen, and renew His people. It is a prayer that the church would be faithful to Christ, full of the Spirit, grounded in truth, rich in love, and effective in witness.
Prayer
Father, strengthen Your church.
Make Your people faithful to Jesus Christ.
Let the church be marked by truth, love, holiness, prayer, worship, and service.
Guard the church from division, compromise, and spiritual dullness.
Keep us from pride, distraction, and the loss of our first love.
Unite Your people in humility, gentleness, and love.
Teach us to bear with one another well.
Help us to walk together in peace and faithfulness.
Make the church a place where Your Word is honored, where prayer is valued, and where people are formed into the likeness of Christ.
Raise up churches that are strong in truth and rich in mercy.
Raise up believers who are rooted in Scripture, led by the Spirit, and eager to serve.
Strengthen pastors, leaders, teachers, servants, and every member of the body.
Encourage the weary.
Correct what is out of order.
Revive what has grown weak.
Let the church shine brightly in a dark world.
Let our life together point people to Jesus.
Let Your church be full of grace, power, and faithful witness.
Thank You that Christ loves the church.
Thank You that He is still building it.
Keep shaping Your people for Your glory.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
