Scripture
"But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd."
—Matthew 9:36 (NKJV)
"Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering"
—Colossians 3:12 (NKJV)
Reflection
Jesus was moved with compassion when He saw the crowds because they were weary, scattered, and like sheep without a shepherd. He saw their pain, their confusion, and their need. He responded with mercy, truth, and help.
A prayer for compassion asks God to give us that same heart for people who need Christ. It is easy to become distracted, self-absorbed, or unmoved by the struggles of others. But the Holy Spirit can help us see people more like Jesus sees them. This prayer asks God to open our eyes to those who are burdened, confused, or far from Him, and to move us toward them with prayer, love, and faithful witness.
Prayer
Father, give us the compassion of Christ for people who need Him.
Do not let us become indifferent to those who are far from You.
Do not let us pass by people’s spiritual need without seeing it.
Open our eyes to those who are weary, confused, burdened, and without hope.
Help us see beyond appearances and recognize how much they need Your grace and truth.
Give us hearts that are tender, not hard.
Give us love that does more than notice pain.
Give us compassion that leads us to pray, to care, and to speak of Jesus.
Keep us from judgment without mercy.
Keep us from fear that makes us pull back.
Teach us to carry the heart of Jesus for those who need a shepherd.
Use our prayers, our words, and our lives to bring help, hope, and witness.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Take a Moment
Who around you may be in need of Christ’s mercy, truth, and hope right now?
If this prayer blessed you, please like and share it with someone who may need it today. May God give you the compassion of Christ and use you to point others to Him.
In Christ,
