Scripture
"4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:"
—1 Corinthians 12:4–7 (NKJV)
"10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God."
—1 Peter 4:10 (NKJV)
Reflection
The Holy Spirit gives gifts to the people of God. These gifts are not signs of personal superiority. They are expressions of God’s grace, given for service, for the strengthening of the church, and for the good of others. No believer has every gift, and no gift is given for self-display. The Spirit distributes gifts according to His wisdom, and every gift matters in the life of the body of Christ.
We want to see the gifts of the Spirit flourish among God’s people. We want to see healing and miracles when they are needed, and we also want every other gift to be recognized and used faithfully. The gifts of the Spirit are meant to lift up Jesus Christ as Lord. They are not given so that we can draw attention to ourselves, but so that Christ may be honored and His people strengthened. A prayer for spiritual gifts asks God to help us discover, develop, and use what He has given. It is a prayer that Christ would be glorified, that people would receive the help and strength they need, and that every believer would recognize how valuable and needed they are in the body of Christ.
Prayer
Father, thank You for giving gifts to Your people by the Holy Spirit.
Thank You that You do not call us to serve You empty-handed.
Thank You that You give grace for the strengthening of Your church.
We ask You to let the gifts of the Spirit flourish among Your people.
Where healing is needed, stretch out Your hand to heal.
Where miracles are needed, move with power according to Your will.
And where other gifts are needed, raise them up and let them be used with wisdom and love.
Help us discover, develop, and use the gifts You have given us with humility, faithfulness, and love.
Keep us from pride, comparison, and self-display.
Keep us from hiding what You have entrusted to us.
Remind us that every member of the body matters and that every gift has value in its proper place.
Make us attentive to the needs around us.
Show us how to encourage, strengthen, comfort, serve, and bless.
Let every gift be exercised under the lordship of Jesus Christ.
Let the gifts of Your Spirit be active in ways that bring real help to people and real glory to Jesus Christ.
Use us for Your glory and for the good of others.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
