Reflection
Discernment is the ability to recognize what is good, true, wise, and pleasing to God. It helps us distinguish between what merely appears right and what actually leads to life. We need discernment because not everything that is appealing is beneficial, and not everything that is spiritual in appearance is truly from God. In a confused and noisy world, discernment helps us walk with wisdom and clarity.
Discernment grows as we stay close to God, learn His Word, and become mature in our spiritual senses. The Holy Spirit helps us recognize what is true, exposes what is false, and teaches us to respond with wisdom. Discernment is not only about avoiding error. It is also about learning to approve what is excellent and respond to life with godly wisdom. A prayer for discernment asks God to sharpen our judgment, deepen our wisdom, and help us recognize what is right in His sight.
Prayer
Father, give us discernment by Your Holy Spirit.
Teach us to recognize what is true and what is false.
Help us to see clearly what is good, wise, and pleasing to You.
Keep us from being misled by appearances, emotions, or pressure from others.
Keep us from confusing what is popular with what is right.
Give us wisdom in the choices we face.
Give us clarity in situations that are confusing.
Help us to test what we hear, what we feel, and what we are drawn toward.
Teach us to approve what is excellent.
Train our hearts and minds to recognize what leads to life and what leads away from You.
Help us discern between good and evil, truth and error, wisdom and foolishness.
Let Your Word shape our judgment.
Let Your Holy Spirit sharpen our understanding.
Make us people who think carefully, listen prayerfully, and walk wisely.
Thank You that You do not leave us to guess our way through life.
Thank You that You give wisdom to those who seek You.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
