Scripture
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.”
—Matthew 5:6 (NKJV)
Reflection
Hunger is one of the most basic human desires. We know what it is to crave food, to feel empty, and to need nourishment. Jesus uses that same image to speak about our spiritual lives. He says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” Just as our bodies need nourishment, our souls need God. We were not made to live on natural things alone.
A prayer for hunger for God asks Him to deepen our desire for His presence, His Word, His ways, and His righteousness. It is possible to feed many natural appetites while neglecting the inner life. But God is able to awaken in us a deeper longing for what truly gives life. This prayer asks Him to make us spiritually hungry and thirsty and to satisfy us with Himself.
Prayer
Lord, give us a real hunger for You.
Teach us to seek Your presence as deeply as we seek what sustains the body.
Make us hungry for Your Word, for Your righteousness, and for a life that pleases You.
Do not let us settle for things that leave the soul empty.
Do not let our hearts grow dull toward the things of God.
Awaken in us a deep desire for what is true, pure, and life-giving.
Turn us away from what cannot truly satisfy.
As our bodies hunger for food and thirst for water, teach our souls to long for You.
Draw us nearer to You and satisfy us with Yourself.
Thank You that You do not turn away those who seek You.
Thank You that You fill those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
