Do you need wisdom from God in a particular situation that you are facing? Here is an example of a prayer for wisdom based on the Scriptures. It is not intended to be a formula, but rather an illustration of how the Word of God informs our communication with Him. When you find yourself at a loss for words during prayer, consider praying the Scriptures.
Dear Heavenly Father,
I uplift your name in praise during this time of prayer, praising you because you are God Almighty and thanking you for every good and perfect gift that you have given me (James 1:17), especially the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ. Father, your Word declares that if anyone lacks wisdom, that person should ask of God who gives generously to all without finding fought (James 1:5). Therefore, Dear Lord, with a humble heart, an attitude of reverence and a heart that is open to you, I petition you for your wisdom concerning this situation that I am facing. I do not know what to do, but my eyes are upon you (2 Chronicles 20:12). The situation is a difficult one and I am completely dependent on you for your help. But I know, Lord, that you are greater than every challenge that I face. You are bigger than my circumstances and greater than my trials. As such, I can trust you fully; I can place my entire situation in your loving hands and cast the whole of my care upon you (1 Peter 5:7). I can confidently wait for your wisdom and guidance, without wavering and without fear (James 1:6-8).
Thank you Lord for being in control. Thank you for being a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). Thank you for being my rock, my refuge, my strength and my friend (Psalm 18). Thank you Lord that your compassion, your mercy and your steadfast love never fail (Lamentations 3:22ff.). Help me to respond to you as a faithful child and servant even in the midst of my most difficult challenges. Help me to maintain Christian joy as I face the trials and difficulties of life (James 1:2), because in these trials you are helping me to develop perseverance and to become mature (James 1:4). Finally, Dear Lord, as Paul prayed concerning the Ephesians and the Colossians, give to me a spirit of wisdom and revelation that I may know you better. Give me a greater knowledge of who you are and what your will is (Ephesians 1:17ff.; Colossians 1:9). Help me to see things from your perspective that I may rejoice in your sovereign control over all things. Thank you for hearing me and considering my petition. Let everything that I think, say and do bring glory and honor to you. In the name of your precious Son, Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
We can be assured that such Scriptural prayers are consistent with God’s will. As such, God hears them and will grant our petition for wisdom (1 John 5:14-15). Be encouraged.
In Christ,
